Hazardous Chemicals

Hazardous chemicals have been defined by federal legislation such as the Resource Recovery and Conservation Act of 1976and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act of 1980 along with the various amendments including the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA)of 1986.

These federal acts set forth a baseline regulating hazardous chemical storage and for how federal and state authorities will regulate such storage. In most cases, individual states have passed more stringent regulations. The table below shows each of the northeast states and how these states interpret and apply their regulations.

This is set forth as a guideline to help you understand when your chemical storage tank is mandated to have an inspection and help you avoid excessive regulatory pressure, the possibility of substantial fines, and/or having state or federal authorities order that your plant be shut down.
